Paul Dukas' scherzo, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, was famously animated in Disney's Fantastia. It amusingly depicts the tale of the young sorcerer who manages to animate a broom to do his household chores for him, but cannot make the broom stop, and the situation escalates.
Jacques Ibert was fascinated by the tones and colours of wind instruments, and this is well illustrated by the sparkling Flute Concerto that he wrote, which will be played by Karen Jones.
The ballet music that Prokofiev wrote for Romeo and Juliet gave rise to several orchestral suites.
We will be playing a selection of highlights from this popular and well-loved work.
